J. Richard Zelonka, Executive Managing Director

 

J. Richard Zelonka, Ph.D., GSS President and senior consultant has served a number of Fortune 500 firms as a consultant, advisor, and change agent and has over 30 years experience in organizational assessment, design, and development.  His experience spans strategic planning, project management, systems engineering, statistical problem solving and control, Six Sigma process improvement, and Lean Manufacturing.

 

Among his clients are:  MSHA, US Department of Labor, DISC Defense Logistics Agency, SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers) , China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (GM Joint Venture), PPG, Sylvania, Koppers Industries, United Defense, General Electric, and Reichold Chemical. 

 

As assistant professor of Management Development at The Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Zelonka served more than 1,000 organizations providing direct consulting and training in quality systems, productivity, advanced business, and workforce development projects resulting in measured performance improvement. 

 

Dr. Zelonka has degrees in Engineering and Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University,  MS in Operations Research and Management from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Development from the Union Institute at Northwestern University.

Mark H. Buzzatto, Managing Director

 

Mark H. Buzzatto, DDS, is a practicing health care professional, educator, public school policy maker, and consultant specializing in performance improvement facilitation to business, government, health care and education.  

 

Dr. Buzzatto is a specialist in organizational assessment design and statistical analysis and has over twenty years experience applying the concepts of strategic planning, project management, and statistical problem solving.  He has provided research and program implementation support for executive education programs, business function improvement, and workforce development projects for Penn State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University.  He has facilitated regional industry initiatives in the presentation of national business seminars and training programs in High Performance Management Strategies, Quality Systems, and Lean Manufacturing. 

 

Dr. Buzzatto served as an advisor to Proctor and Gamble Corporation in the development of marketing strategy and product design and managed the introduction of a line of Italian candies into the U.S. market.  He received his doctorate of dental surgery from Temple University, is a member of the International Association of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and the South Hills Area School District Association.  He was the creator, writer, producer, and host of Chamber Focus, a local, issues-based cable TV program that aired for 10 years. He is a GSS Six Sigma Green Belt

Thomas C. Coleman, Associate Managing Director

 

Tom is an experienced program manager, educational developer, trainer, and consultant to the automotive industry.  Prior to joining GSS, Mr. Coleman served as Program Manager Corporate Technologies for SAE International, where he managed the development of programs and services for automotive OEMs and suppliers including:  the Automotive Supplier Excellence Program (ASEP); Global Supplier Requirements Program; Product Development Engineering; and Technical Standards Applications Assistance.  

 

Mr. Coleman designed and managed SAE’s consulting and training activities in China including programs for Shanghai GM; China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC); and the Ningbo Economic Development Region. He also managed manufacturing and process improvement programs for Chinese automotive suppliers including:  Dongfeng Xiangfan Instruments Systems Co, Ltd. (electro-mechanical and MEMS sensors); Minth Corporation (automotive structural and decorative products); Fengmao Rubber and Plastics Co., Ltd. (timing belts and hoses); Ningbo Qiaoshi Rubber and Plastics Co., Ltd. (brake diaphragms) and Wenzhou Electrical Machinery Co., Ltd. (fuel pumps and fuel delivery systems).

 

Mr. Coleman’s prior positions include Manager, Professional Development at SAE International and Director of Continuing Education, The Pennsylvania State University, Beaver Campus.   Mr. Coleman has a B.A. in Journalism from Penn State, M.Ed. in Higher Education from the University of Pittsburgh and completed coursework and comprehensives toward a D.Ed.in Administration and Policy Studies.

Nancy H. Zelonka,  Associate Managing Director

 

Nancy H. Zelonka, Ph.D., is an experienced educator and consultant with a strong background in academic organization development and information technology.  Co-founder of GSS Management Consultants, she has more than 30 years experience in applying concepts and techniques associated with organizational development, strategic planning, and project management. 

 

Dr. Zelonka has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in information technology at Penn State University and the University of Pittsburgh, provided  in-service teacher training programs, and served as an advisor and consultant to numerous non-profit organizations in the arts, music, and theater. 

 

Since 1985, Dr. Zelonka has served on the Board of Trustees at Point Park University where she chaired the University’s Presidential search in 1996 .   Her Ph.D. and M.A. are in Health and Physical Education from the University of Pittsburgh, and she has a B.Ed from Duquesne University.

David Pahnos,  Associate Managing Director

 

David Pahnos is an experienced communication technologist having served as President, VR Telecom Corporation, a virtual reality telephony company engaged in the creation of advanced internet telecommunications products.  Mr. Pahnos organized and managed the company from start-up to product release,  established management, administration, and organizational development systems, drove product innovation and created a market responsive product development environment.

 

Mr. Pahnos was the founding director of the National Robotics Engineering Consortium at Carnegie Mellon University.  In 1991, he received a Smithsonian Award on behalf of the Ambler Project Team at the Robotics Institute.  The Ambler, a Mars rover prototype, was named as one of the “Ten Best Achievements in Technology in 1990.”  Prior to his work with the Robotics Institute, Mr. Pahnos served as Vice President for NUS Corporation, a nationwide nuclear and environmental engineering firm with 1800 employees.

 

Mr. Pahnos has degrees in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and Professional Writing from Carnegie Mellon University.  He also completed doctoral coursework at Carnegie Mellon in Technical Rhetoric.  In addition to his consulting work with GSS, Mr. Pahnos is also a Managing Partner of Gaea Estates Limited, a UK based corporation engaged in the development of a 600 acre, ocean-front resort community in the Bahamas.
